Nope, can't hurt. Always nice to have a hobby. ; )

I enjoyed this one a lot. It's on my shelf with a group of books of "guys doing strange things" including Know It All (guy reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica), Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure (guy finding... googlewhacks), Round Ireland with a Fridge (guy toting a fridge around Ireland), and Join Me (guy starting a cult for fun), among others.

I'll have to check this one out...
If you hadn't read it, it was going to be your housewarming gift!
The book itself sounds fascinating. Scrabble, on the other hand, makes me feel like a complete and utter moron.
that sounds like an awesome book. :)

it's really weird. i am fairly well-read and i have a fairly extensive vocabulary (trust me on this one. i know i don't use it very often. hehe.) but i SUCK at scrabble. maybe i just need more practice. hehe.

I LOVE SCRABBLE!

I must pick up this book. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

<kitchen table brag>I almost have all the two-letter words memorized.</kitchen table brag>
There is a great documentary about competitive Scrabble called "Word Wars". It kind of shows the seedy underbelly of Scrabble. Seedy underbelly? Yes. It's not that seedy, but seedier than you would expect.

It's not family fare, there is a generous amount of swearing in it but over all it's a really good movie. I stayed up well past my bedtime watching it when I caught it on cable. It's available on Netflix as both a DVD and a "Watch-It-Now".

I thin ki'm going to try to get this book at the local library....

I'm still trying to convert you to babble, but it seems so far I am unsuccessful....

youwould Loooove it. Www.playbabble.com

I loved Word Freak, too. So much that I'm even going to read Fatsis's A Few Seconds of Panic, despite my lack of interest in American-rules football....
Jen and grrrace -- the thing is you realize that playing Scrabble has little to do with being "smart" (except for having a decent vocabulary).... the most important skill seems to be a good anagram-er.
Katie -- oh, i forgot about playbabble when you first told me about it. As long as it doesn't require "mouse-dexterity" (I'm borrowing the Beloved's laptop as my desktop is infected....grrrr)

Oh no mouse needed, I play on the laptop all the time.

It gives you a grid with a certian number of words in it and a 24 hour period to find all the words. Usually between 150-360 words. SOme days it is easy other days its really hard. learn a few new scrabble words that way!
