"...who has not stood, anxious, at the curtain of their heart?" - Ranier Maria Rilke.

I read Duinos Elegies not as a compulsory requirement in college, but more of a inquiry into the love life of this man. His love poems, unique and lovely, spoke to me. This quote sings, even years later, about the human condition and our personal position with regards to life, living, experience....

Steve - great post. In 2004 I read the Declaration and the Consitution front-to-back and was amazed at the language, thought and attitude conveyed. I truly believe we as a culture have lost too many critical points of reference that we once shared in common with the founders. You don't hear men speak like this today (and if they do, they are marginalized):

"The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for, among old parchments, or musty records. They are written, as with a sun beam in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself; and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power." - Alexander Hamilton

Postmodern culture has tragically marred, attacked and revolted against the reality of Hamilton's words. "as with a sun beam in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself" - what an awesome phrase...

We are a society of cheats who speak of the Constitution as our protector and foundation while the politicians we elect conspire against it in an effort to gain power or an advantage over others. Read Article 1, Section 8 which proscribes what the national government may do; we have an out of control and illegal government.
