Fast @ Forty
Another day in August, and another age-related post (I promise this won't become a theme...).
I saw this headline this morning and it made me smile, especially after dropping two tennis sets last night to a friend 10 years my junior.
40-year-old wins another national swim title
Just 15 months after giving birth, Torres hoping to make 5th Olympics
At age 40, and just 15 months after having a child, Torres is back in the water hoping to earn her fifth trip to the Olympics. She's competing this week at the U.S. National Championships, with every intention of reclaiming a spot on the American team next summer.
Torres already looks like a serious contender, winning the 100-meter freestyle Wednesday night against a field that included two other former Olympians.
"Don't put an age on your dreams," said Torres, whose 14th national title came a quarter-century after her first, back in 1982 as a 14-year-old.
I, for one (or should I say at 41), find that insprirational. I know who I'm rooting for already.

Bonds is into his 40's and would still be at the top of his game if they wouldn't have takent he steroids away.
Amazing story!
I read a really great article, I think it was in Parade magazine (?) hardly a science journal, but the idea was that when wild animals actively hunt for food and have to work for it, their cells regenerate. When they "hibernate" or are inactive, that tells the cells to degenerate because the food supply is low. The idea is that as long as we exercise, our cells will keep regenerating right up until we are very old. So I don't see any reason why someone in their 80s or older especially nowadays couldn't outcompete anyone else. ;) Then again I'm an optimist.
